Teachers' Personal Statements

Louise Bowen

I am really excited about joining Grove Road primary school this year. I have a passion for child-led learning, where children’s skills can be developed using their interests.  This helps to ignite excitement and a propensity to learn.
I gained a PGCE in 2010 with a specialism in Equality, Inclusion and Citizenship.  My training took place at London Southbank University and our focus was on Inner City schools.  I have had experience of teaching across the age ranges but mainly in Year 1 and the Early Years.  I have previously worked as head of Early Years and have had experience of co-ordinating PE as a subject. This year, my focus will be on Modern Foreign Languages.
Out of school hours, I love to spend time with my friends and family and I also travel to Spain frequently.  I also enjoy running…when I have time!

Emma Chappell

I am very much enjoying my new teaching position at Grove Road. I am looking forward to another year of hard work in year 6 and joining a fantastic and dedicated staff to continue my career. I have taught for 14 years in Kenton, Harrow and I am very much looking forward to teaching in the community I live in, after recently moving to Tring.

I spend most of my spare time looking after my own family and catching up with friends and relatives. I enjoy going to the movies, reading, listening to music and exploring Whipsnade zoo with my boys.

Katie Collins

I started my journey at Grove Road in April 2016, working in Reception and Year 3. I am delighted to have now joined the team full time, teaching in Reception and leading the Early Years Foundation Stage. I am passionate about early years education and am excited to work alongside like-minded teachers who are dedicated and enthusiastic about providing the best education possible.

I started teaching 10 years ago in the London Borough of Brent before moving to Herts County Council nearly 2 years ago. I have always taught in the Early Years Foundation Stage and have led this phase in 3 different schools for the past 7 years. During my teaching career I have also led Literacy throughout the school, Modern Languages, and was an Assistant Head Teacher for just over a year. I hope with my experience to bring some new and exciting ideas to Grove Road as well as continuing my learning journey with the Grove Road team.

In my spare time I enjoy socialising with my friends and family, travelling to new places and swimming.

Alison Elvery

As a full-time class teacher at Grove Road, I have taught in the Early Years, Key Stage One and Key Stage Two and was Key Stage One Phase Leader. I now use this first-hand experience in my role as a cover teacher since becoming part-time in 2015.

Outside of school I enjoy days out with my husband and our young children and not washing-up, cleaning or sorting washing!

Lloyd Francis

I joined Grove Road in year 5 in September 2014 after 21 years in the financial recruitment market. I have a passion for Geology which I studied at university.

In my spare time I do a lot of mountain biking and coach rugby at Tring Rugby club.

Ria Gordon

I am now entering into my eighth year of teaching professionally at primary level and have experience of teaching in both the Early Years and Key Stage One.  This year I am set to embark on an exciting new challenge as  SENCo at Grove Road and I am very much looking forward to coordinating Special Needs across the school. As well as taking on this new role, I am also going to be providing PPA and Leadership cover for different classes across each age phase of the school.

Vicky Hiller

I am very excited about joining Grove Road. I will be starting my third year of teaching. I completed the Graduate Teaching Programme in 2011. After this, I then went on to teach a Year 5 class and then Year 6. Previous to this, I was a teaching assistant for two and half years where I worked from Foundation stage to Year 6.

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, keep fit classes and occasionally thrill seek by taking part in sky diving and not forgetting go-karting.

Danielle Hunt

Having grown up in Tring, this is where my dream of teaching first started and I am delighted to be joining the team at Grove Road. During my teaching career I have spent two years teaching in Reception and two years in Year One. Subjects that I have spent time specialising in are P.E. and Maths both at my previous school. I am now looking forward to continuing my journey into Year Two!

Outside of work I enjoy cooking, reading, DIY and spending time with my family.

Sophie Kerin

I am currently in my sixth year at Grove Road School after completing a BEd Honours degree in Primary Education and am thoroughly enjoying it! I am excited to work alongside Grove's fantastic team to teach the chidren and enable them to learn in fun ways.

In my spare time I enjoy going for walks with my family and friends and listening to music. I also have a passion for dancing.

Debbie Lamb

Debbie started at Grove Road in September 2017. She is the Inclusion co-ordinator.

Chloe Lea

I joined the Grove Road team in September 2013 as an NQT after completing a BA (Hons) degree in Primary Education. I am currently in my fourth year of teaching at Grove Road as a Year 1 class teacher. I am the Science and Environment Curriculum Development Team Leader, where I oversee Science, Humanities, Modern Foreign Languages, Computing as well as the development of the extensive outdoor area we have here.

I joined the governing body in my third year of teaching at Grove Road as it presented itself as an excellent opportunity for me to gain more experience and understanding of wider leadership responsibilities, beyond my classroom role. It also provides me the opportunity to contribute to decisions that are made by the governing body and to build strong links between the governing body and the staff of the school.

Away from work you will find me spending time with my family, socialising with friends, travelling, exercising, reading, and cooking!

Marco Maranzana

Marco started at Grove Road in September 2017. He teaches Year 3.

Freya McAteer

I am very excited and thrilled about becoming part the Grove Road team.  I am passionate about teaching children and helping them grow and develop in many different ways. My vision is to provide a place of wonder and excitement for all children.

I am currently teaching Year 1 and am also the team leader for Key Stage 1 as well as coordinating History throughout the school. I started my teaching career in a Primary school in Rickmansworth and then moved to one in Chorleywood. I hope from my experiences so far I am able bring with me some new and exciting ideas to Grove Road.

In my spare time I enjoy baking, going to the cinema, taking my two dogs for walks and travelling. Before I started my teaching career I took a gap year and travelled to Fiji where I gained my scuba diving PADI Advanced Open Water Diver qualification working as part of a project to monitor the fish and coral for the Fijian government. I then travelled to Namibia where I looked after injured and orphaned wild animals such as cheetahs, lions, baboons and vultures. I took part in Camp America where I worked with disadvantaged young people at a charity run residential camp in Boston for three consecutive summers, working as a general counsellor, life guard and swimming teacher. I loved all these experiences and will never forget them. I think they have also helped me a great deal in my teaching career.

Stephanie Meedin

I am currently teaching year 5 at Grove Road school after completing a BA Honors Degree in Primary Education. I am really excited to be back at Grove Road after teaching here on my second placement. I have 4 years experience working with children with learning disabilities as well as working as a deputy manager of a pre school.

In my spare time I enjoy playing tennis, dance and cooking. As well as spending time with my friends and family, especially my nephew.

Sophie Morris

I am very excited to join Grove Road this year, teaching in Year 4. Previously, I did an undergraduate degree in History and went onto do my PGCE through the University of Hertfordshire. During this time, I gained experience teaching across all key stages but mostly in KS2. Now, beginning my journey in Year 4, I am excited about teaching all aspects of the curriculum and especially exploring the adventures of the Ancient Mayans!

Outside of the classroom I enjoy running, reading, baking (mostly cakes!) and craft making.

Sophie O'Leary

I am extremely excited about joining the Grove Road team this year as a class teacher in Year 2. I have recently graduated from University with a BEd Honours Degree in Primary Education specialising in Maths. I am really looking forward to my first year here, where I hope to enthuse and engage the children to develop their love for learning.

In my spare time I enjoy relaxing with friends and family, baking, going to the gym and travelling. In my gap year I was lucky enough to travel Australia and South East Asia, where I taught English in an orphanage in Cambodia. More recently I have been on a month trip around eastern Europe, where I loved learning about the history and different cultures.

Katie Reeve

In my spare time I like to read, relax and socialise of course!

Michael Tomkinson

I joined Grove Road in September 2014 as an NQT after completing my BA in Primary Education. This year I am very excited to be teaching year 4. I'm relishing the opportunity to teach a broad curriculum through a variety of engaging themes and topics. A personal love of science and P.E. is often evident when given the opportunity to deliver practical lessons. I am also part of the P.E curriculum team.

Outside of school I enjoy being involved with sport and travelling, when given the opportunity. This was particularly true of my year out, between academic study, where I took the chance to visit and explore a number of countries around the world.

Russell Tompkins

Russell started at Grove Road in September 2017. He teaches year 5.
